What is HIFU?

HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer that ablates (destroys) tissue. The device utilizes an acoustic lens to concentrate multiple intersecting beams of ultrasound to zero in on a highly-specified area of tissue so other areas are not damaged in the process.1

What is HIFU

The HIFU Process

The specialist uses the robotically controlled Ablatherm® HIFU device to remove prostate tissues. Before the procedure, patients are given an epidural or general anesthesia. By inserting the probe into the rectum, the specialist can view the treatment area on a computer monitor using the HIFU’s imaging capabilities. Once the doctor has located the prostate and the area to be treated, the HIFU procedure begins and lasts between one and three hours. After the treatment, a catheter will be placed in the urethra because of prostate swelling which occurs during HIFU. Pain after the treatment is rare, although patients often experience some discomfort for a few days after the procedure.1
